Sonny Perdue
SPOTLIGHT ON: Economic development results

GDEcD landed a record number of economic development projects in fiscal 2009, Governor Perdue announced recently. Despite the economic climate, the number of project announcements and prospect leads increased, the Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Division had a banner year and tourism continues to be a strong driver of the state’s economy.
CNBC lauded Georgia for having the top workforce in the nation, according to a recent report. In its annual grading of state business climates, cable network CNBC ranked Georgia’s workforce best in the nation. In addition to workforce, Georgia scored highly in the cost of living category and the transportation and infrastructure ranking.
Three of the state’s top economic development leaders came together to provide a mid-year update on efforts to retain and attract new companies to Georgia. Ken Stewart, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), George Israel, President and CEO of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and Sam A. Williams, President of the Metro Atlanta Chamber, reflected upon 2009 achievements and discussed all that is being done to ensure that Georgia remains an attractive destination for business.

Dynamic Turbine, Inc., of Norcross will expand its manufacturing capacity with the purchase of new equipment. Dynamic Turbine recently closed a SBA loan for $1.6 million that it will use to purchase machinery. Dynamic Turbine is a recent participant in Export GA and was assisted by GDEcD’s International Trade team and regional project managers for export and expansion financing assistance.

This was a long hard process but obviously well worth it. We have the business but needed the capital to bring in the additional machines and capacity. Our customers see that we are continuing our momentum and growth. We could not have done this without the assistance and experience of the State of Georgia.

Governor Perdue recently led a delegation of 25 Georgia companies to the Southeastern United States – Canadian Provinces Alliance conference (SEUS//CP) in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The conference brought together hundreds of delegates from businesses and communities across six southeastern states and seven Canadian provinces.

While at the conference, two aerospace industry organizations signed a memorandum of understanding to forge more partnerships between businesses in the Warner Robins, Ga. area and Atlantic Canada. The new agreement is another success for SEUS//CP, which was formed in 2007 to strengthen economic, trade and research ties between the regions.

The Center of Innovation for Agribusiness welcomed a new director. Donnie Smith, a 40-year veteran of the industry and fifth-generation farmer, became the executive director in late July. Smith will also continue to serve as the Special Advisor to the Governor on Agriculture Affairs. The center is housed at the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Tifton Campus and provides statewide strategic industry expertise while accelerating growth in Georgia’s agribusiness industry across the state.
